Dr. Almos Tassonyi

Dr. Almos Tassonyi is an Executive Fellow at The School of Public Policy, University of Calgary. He is a Research Associate at the International Property Tax Institute and a Research Fellow of the International Centre for Economic Analysis.
Almos has over thirty years of experience working at the Region of Durham, the Ontario Ministries of Municipal Affairs and Finance on a wide variety of issues in municipal finance and in China, India and Hungary with the World Bank, the Forum of Federations and the Canadian Urban Institute. He has also taught at Laurentian, Toronto Metropolitan (Ryerson) universities, the Institute of Fiscal Research (Beijing) and the University of Toronto and directed the Urban Policy program at the School of Public Policy, University of Calgary.
Almos has co-authored a book on the reform of the property tax system in Ontario and published work on municipal budgeting, property taxation, fiscal decentralization and municipal fiscal history. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Calgary, an MSc in Economic History from the London School of Economics and a B.A and M.A in Economics and Economic History from the University of Toronto. In 2021, he received the Engagement Award from the Municipal Finance Officers’ Association of Ontario for his contribution to the Municipal Debt project.
