How Will Local Governments Deal With The COVID Cash Crunch?

Municipalities across Canada are facing significant financial pressures due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. On Thursday, April 30, the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) and Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance presented a webinar conversation about what the crisis means for municipal budgets and fiscal sustainability in the short and long term.
This event was part of CUI’s ongoing series, “Cities in the Time of COVID-19.”
Panelists
Noreen Kassam is the Director Finance at the City of Burnaby and the President of the Canadian Association of Government Finance Officers (CAGFO). She has over 25 years of experience in public sector finance, having worked in the past for the City of Surrey, Metro Vancouver and the Auditor General of Canada
Kelly Paleczny is the General Manager at the London Transit Commission. Kelly is also a member of the board of directors of the Canadian Urban Transit Association and the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Public Transit Association
Mary Persson is the Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer at the City of Edmonton
Enid Slack is the Director of the Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Recent co-edited publications include Financing Infrastructure: Who Should Pay? and Is Your City Healthy? Measuring Urban Fiscal Health
