BIG CITY, BIG IDEAS: The Bays

October 20, 2016 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Big City, Big Ideas lecture, Oct. 20, 2016.

Sydney and Toronto share remarkable similarities in culture, community and global economic status, and in major waterfront and city centre revitalization. Guests heard a fascinating discussion on the very different ways these cities are achieving similar goals from the leaders of waterfront renewal in both cities.

Speakers

Keynote speaker: David Pitchford, the Chief Executive UrbanGrowth NSW, has been charged with the delivery of the largest urban regenerations in Australia – the Bays Precinct and the Central Station to Eveleigh Rail Corridor, projects intended to transform Sydney Harbour and the city overall and drive the international competitiveness of Sydney and the nation.  David was previously chief advisor to the UK Prime Minister on large-scale project delivery and managed the creation of the famous Palm development in Dubai. He is a full professor at the University of New South Wales.

Introductory remarks: Portia Maier, Consul-General and Senior Trade & Investment Commissioner, Australia

David’s lecture was followed by a moderated discussion with Will Fleissig, President and CEO of Waterfront Toronto. Joe Berridge, who has advised waterfront redevelopment planning in Sydney and Toronto, moderated the discussion.

This event was part of the “Big City, Big Ideas (BCBI)” lecture series, organized by Urban Strategies in collaboration with the Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance (IMFG), School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG), Department of Geography & Planning, Innovation Policy Lab (IPL), Global Cities Institute (GCI), and Martin Prosperity Institute (MPI) at the University of Toronto.
