Investing in Toronto’s Future: The 6th Annual IMFG Toronto City Manager’s Address

Toronto is an exceptional city at least partially because of public policies and past investments. As Toronto City Manager Peter Wallace discussed in his 2016 remarks to IMFG, Toronto faces challenges in meeting the demands of a global, international city. On October 26, Peter joined IMFG to discuss how the City of Toronto can address these challenges and invest in Toronto’s future. What key steps could Council and staff take? What strategic policy levers could be used? What financial and implementation capacity is needed to deliver on Council’s visions for future investments?

Peter Wallace

As City Manager for the City of Toronto, Peter Wallace is responsible for over 30,000 staff, a $12 billion operating budget and a $32 billion 10-year capital plan. With more than 30 years in public service, Peter has also served as Secretary of the Cabinet, head of the Ontario Public Service and Clerk of the Executive Council; Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary of Treasury Board; Deputy Minister of Energy; and Deputy Minister and Associate Secretary of the Cabinet. He began his public service career in 1981 after completing a BA (Honours) in Political Economy and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Toronto.

Sevaun Palvetzian

Sevaun Palvetzian has been CEO at CivicAction since January of 2014. Under her leadership, the organization has launched the CivicAction Leadership Foundation and two new initiatives focused on youth unemployment and mental health in the workplace. Sevaun frequently contributes to city-building efforts including serving as a member of the Premier’s Community Hubs Advisory Group, The Toronto Police Service Transformational Task Force, and also sits on the Board of Directors for Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council, NPower Canada, Waterfront Toronto, and is a member of Ivey Business School Leadership Council.
