Blanche and Sandy Van Ginkel Fellowship in Municipal Finance and Governance
The Blanche and Sandy Van Ginkel Fellowship in Municipal Finance and Governance is offered annually to a full-time graduate student who is enrolled at the University of Toronto, and who is engaged in studies related to municipal finance or governance. This fellowship has been funded by Diamante Development Corporation in support of the Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance (IMFG).
This award has been named after Blanche Lemco and the late Daniel (Sandy) Van Ginkel. Blanche and Sandy, who both hold the Order of Canada, have made a distinguished contribution to city planning and modern architecture. This Fellowship provides an important link between the IMFG’s educational mission and its research objectives by supporting students who are entering this field.
Eligibility
To receive this award, students must be registered at the University of Toronto at a doctoral or master’s level on a full-time basis, and must be pursuing studies and/or research related to municipal finance or governance. Research in these areas must be part of the student’s graduate program. Preference will be given to students who are interested in the impact of municipal finance and governance on built form. The holder of the award is required to do a presentation on their research at a seminar organized by the IMFG.

Amount
The award recipient will receive C$5,000. The Blanche and Sandy Van Ginkel Graduate Fellowship may be held in conjunction with any other award.
Length and Residency
The award of the Blanche and Sandy Van Ginkel Fellowship is for the period September 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025. The holder of this Fellowship must reside in Toronto in order to permit full participation in the various events and seminars offered by the IMFG throughout the year. We recognize that Fellowship holders may need to be away from Toronto periodically for research purposes.
