The reality of sub-national taxation in conflict-affected states
Taxation is critical to rebuilding infrastructure and ensuring sustainable peace and development in conflict-affected countries. However, when policymakers and international donors approach the task of rebuilding fiscal systems, they base their ideas on the experience of developed countries. On May 24, 2018, IMFG Graduate Fellow Vanessa van den Boogaard spoke about the importance of informal and non-state taxation in conflict-affected countries, the implications for formal state and institution building, and the ways formal and informal institutions may work together to achieve more sustainable sub-national revenue collection outcomes in her seminar, “The reality of sub-national taxation in conflict-affected states: The incidence and implications of informal taxation.”
